Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy at Century Eye Care

Visiting the eye doctor at least once a year should be standard for optimal health. This is especially true for people with have pre-existing eye conditions, such as astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, or other eye disorders. Although glasses and contacts can treat certain eye conditions, we offer vision therapy as a non-invasive treatment for various common eye problems, including crossed eyes, reading/learning disorders, double vision, lazy eye, and more. At Century Eye Care, our ophthalmologist can assess your eye health and provide the appropriate treatment for your condition.

What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is used to treat eye disorders that aren't caused by refractive errors. Refractive issues can cause common eye problems such as near-sightedness or far-sightedness. However, some eye disorders such as amblyopia (known as lazy eye), eye alignment and coordination issues, poor focus, and poor hand-eye coordination can all be caused by issues other than refractive problems. That's why our team at Century Eye Care uses vision therapy to help. Common treatments we use include:

  • Eye covers or patches
  • Eye exercises
  • Training procedures
  • Use of lenses and prisms

Our ophthalmologist can develop a treatment plan based on the patient's specific medical condition.

Who Needs Vision Therapy?

We often use vision therapy to treat amblyopia. Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is caused when one eye is weaker than the other and begins to be ignored by the brain after failing to send signals through the optic nerve. As a result, the weaker eye will begin to drift inward or outward.

Poor focus issues can cause headaches, blurry vision, dizziness, and eye strain, among other symptoms. Although adults might recognize these symptoms, children have difficulty understanding whether they are experiencing eye-related symptoms or not. That's why it's important to take your child to our office for annual eye exams. The sooner we identify a vision problem, the faster we can treat the condition and prevent it from worsening. It's important to remember that vision problems can develop at any age, so adults can also benefit from vision therapy.
