Ortho-K lenses are different than traditional contacts because they are worn at night while you sleep, rather than during the day. If you are tired of relying on contacts during the day or have a condition that makes wearing contacts uncomfortable, schedule an appointment with Century Eye Care Medical. Our ophthalmologist will fit you with these special lenses. We have provided quality eye care to Gardena, Hawthorne, and the surrounding areas for years.
How Does Ortho-K Work?
Before going to bed, you will put each Ortho-K lens in your eyes. While you are sleeping, the contacts will gently reshape your corneas, correcting your refractive errors. When you wake up in the morning and remove the contacts, you will be able to see clearly without needing to wear glasses or traditional contacts.
Benefiting from Ortho-K?
Anyone with refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism that do not want to wear traditional contacts during the day can benefit from Ortho-K. Other people can benefit from these lenses as well. These include:
- Patients with dry eye syndrome: Dry eye syndrome can make it difficult to wear traditional contacts because those contacts absorb moisture from your eyes. Dry eye causes a lack of natural tears, traditional contacts may not be a good option. Ortho-K lenses are worn while you sleep and when your eyes are closed, they do not require much moisture.
- Poor candidates for LASIK: LASIK is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of your cornea, correcting your refractive errors. Certain conditions make you a poor candidate for LASIK, such as dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, diabetes, and certain autoimmune diseases. Ortho-K is an excellent alternative for LASIK.
- Children: Myopia is present at birth and the condition worsens over time. Studies have shown that Ortho-K can slow and even stop the progression of myopia in children over 8 years old. These lenses are an excellent treatment option to preserve your child's vision.
